Incorporating Tikanga into my daily teaching practice is important to me and even though I acknowledge that this isn't a strength of mine I am committed and always trying to improve my practice and the learning outcomes for my class.
In Room One our morning karakia and kai karakia are entrenched in our daily practice but I wanted to build upon our knowledge and skills so approached Cherrie and Poipoi about whether Room One could join the Whare on a Friday morning for karakia and waiata. They were as excited as I was and we have now had this routine for the last three terms. We have enjoyed learning new waiata and actions and customs related to starting the day in the Whare. It has been wonderful to experience the Whare taking us under their wing and sharing their knowledge and supporting us on our learning journey.
