Next Steps for Tataiako

After brain storming our next steps at the conference it was exciting to get back to kindergarten and begin implementing some of them being aware that small steps are important for sustainability. The new mat time routines gives our mat times a more holistic approach and is reflecting a greater commitment to tikanga. by sitting in a circle we are all able to see one another which makes the experience more meaning full. Starting the day with our welcome karakia feels right and lighting the candle embraces the day ahead. Our tamariki have responded positively to these new changes.
At the end mat time I have thought for quite sometime that it was lacking as far as ending the day by just sending the tamariki off the mat so this week in consultation with the team I introduced our ka kite song which we sung in a standing up circle. the tamariki responded really well to this and I felt it gave a nice closure to the day.

At Nature Discovery we have begun to use the word Mihi when talking about the Atua in our morning ritual and raising our arm and saying tena koe to them. As this is new the tamariki did seem a little taken back at first but we have now done this twice and they are beginning to come on board with it. I do still feel it would be nice to Mihi back at the kindergarten to the atua at the start of our kindergarten day but feel that this isnt possible at the moment as mat time has gone under quite a change and is risking getting a little long if we add anything else. I will look into fresh ways of making the atua visible and are looking forward to hearing back from Paparangi Kindergarten about their atua waiata.

I am excited about George coming next week to help us create our kindergarten pepeha.

Tataiako Conference

There were many key points that broadened my knowledge of Tataiako and how to implement this into my practice and support our Maori learners. Some of these are as follows...

That success comes when schools support students to be Maori by giving support in the areas of identity, language and culture.

That Mana is grown by caring for and nurturing others Manaaki.

Don't stand still keep moving forward with your own learning, keep using reo.

The power of place based education- connection to the environment and relationships.

Being able to embed tikanga into what I am already doing, becoming more aware of documenting what is already happening.

To gain knowledge in our local area / iwi, who are the Maori leaders in our community, what are the success stories. How do we pitch Maori student success in our center.

As a team we also were able to brain storm our next steps acknowledging that small steps done well will be sustainable.

Through out this conference I was able to gain deeper knowledge and understanding but are well aware that I am still at the start of my journey. My goal is to now move forward and implement the change that needs to happen.

Goal Progress Summary

Cassandra Jarvie, 22nd July 2016
Goal 1: By November 2016 I will have a greater knowledge and understanding of Tataiako.
So that the cultural competencies within this document are more visible in my daily practice and documentation.
Goal 2: By June 2016 I will have further developed skills and knowledge using technology to enable me to create Multimedia presentations for use in the documentation of children’s learning.
Summary of Evidence
Goal 1 Tataiako
 PMI Workshop
Korero based on the cultural compentcies of Tataiako
 PPM Meeting
Goal 2 IPad
 Creating an IMovie
Creating a learning story using my IPad
Planned steps and areas to develop
Goal 1
Reflect on the work that we have done as a team using the Y framework, What does Tataiako Look like, Feel like and Sound like? How will this influence your future practice?
Have the diagram of the competencies of Tataiako visible as a reminder for you when documenting children’s learning and this may also help you continuing to develop deeper understandings of the cultural competencies.
Attend the TRCC conference on Tataiako to strengthen your understandings further.
Goal 2
Add a reflection on the I Movie and the story you created using Pages, how you shared the skills and knowledge that you learnt with colleagues. This could be evidence towards your goal and criteria 4: Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional learning and development of personal practice (Ako) and 5: Show leadership that contributes to effective teaching and learning (Wananga)
Continue to experiment and explore a variety of apps available and then reflect on which ones work best for you.

Write up your discussions with Donna from Papakura West and trial her suggestions.

Five out of five leadership 20, 21 July 2016
Over the two days we held discussions about engaging parents and Whanau, negotiating successful transitions and growing others. Aspects that I pulled out of these discussions were how I deal with these different aspects in my practice and how I would rate my effectiveness. I found the questions very confronting but in a good way, it made me think deeply about my practice and ideas on areas to work on. On one of the slides Barbara had a very clear and simple diagram about taitiakao and I could see how by simplifying the words it became clearer to me and it would be a useful tool in my documentation. It made me rethink how the priority outcomes in our kindergarten vision are documented through the children’s portfolios and whether my learning stories are reflecting enough of these important outcomes.

Barbra had some useful tips about giving feedback to others that I will try and use in my practice…to ask permission before offering feedback to others, ask each other for their view of a situation as everyone views things differently, to try and be more open about sharing feelings to get a new perspective for different outcomes.

18.5.16
PPM Meeting
Which criteria does this evidence? 3-Demonstrate commitment to bicultural partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand
4- Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional learning and development of personal professional practice.
12- Use critical inquiry and problem solving effectively in their professional practice.                                                                                                                                                                                     Why does this evidence this criterion?

How has does this show that your practice has changed/improved?
After feeling quite over whelmed about how I was going to implement Tataiako into my daily practice by talking amongst our team with Dianne Akast we all agreed to start at the beginning and use the Y diagram of look feel and hear to help us to focus on identifying what the five competencies look like in our kindergarten. By working through the Y diagram for the Manaakitanga competency helped me to put into concept how this looks in my own personal practice. It made me aware that I was already using many different tools and techniques in my practice and it made me begin to think of different ways that I could make it more visible in my documentation. I am looking forward to brainstorming the rest of the competencies with the rest of the team over the coming weeks.

26.4.16
Korero based on the Cultural Competencies of Tataiako
Which criteria does this evidence? 3- Demonstrate commitment to bicultural partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand,
4- Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional learning and development
                                                                 of professional practice.
12- Use critical inquiry and problem-solving effectively in their professional
                                                                   practice.
Why does this evidence this criterion? It has provided me with the opportunity to engage in professional dialogue with my colleagues which demonstrates my commitment to a bicultural partnership in Aoteroa and ongoing professional learning.
How has does this show that your practice has changed/improved? I am developing an awareness and understanding of Tataiako, as this knowledge develops I will be able to articulate my current practice to these competencies. Through having this discussion I recognise I need to gain a greater understanding of the competencies and how they link to the teaching criteria.

PMI Workshop
Which criteria does t
1-Establish and maintain effective professional relationships focused on the learning and wellbeing of all akonga.
4-Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional learning and development of personal professional practice.
Why does this evidence this criterion?
I engaged in ethical, respectful positive and collaborative, professional relationships with teaching colleagues and other professionals.
I participated responsively in professional learning opportunities within the learning community.
How has this impacted on your practice?
It gave me the opportunity to engage in dialogue with other professionals, listen to their views and sharing my own. By doing this it has made me more confident in articulating my practice, what I do and what I can do better.

How has does this show that your practice has changed/improved?
Being involved in this workshop demonstrated to me how the five competencies of Tataiako can be put into practice. This has helped to strengthen my knowledge of Tataiako.
Whanaungatanga-building relationships
Tangata Whenuatanga- learning within a cultural context
Manaakitanga- Values, integrity, trust, sincerity, equity
Wananga- robust dialogue for the benefit of learners, co constructing, knowledge, innovation
Ako- reciprocal teaching and learning, taking responsibility for own learning
